Backyard Remodels in Toronto: What to Expect
Thinking about a backyard remodel? Whether you live in downtown Toronto or the surrounding suburbs like Etobicoke or North York, the process of transforming your outdoor space can feel overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time tackling a project of this size.
At Master in the Field Landscape Design, we’ve guided dozens of Toronto homeowners through backyard renovations—from compact city yards to full-scale resort-style designs. Here's what you can expect during a remodel and how to make the most of your investment.
1. The Initial Consultation: Getting to Know YOU, Your needs & DREAMS for your outdoor spaces & for me to see your landscapes
Your backyard remodel starts with ideas. Together we discuss We’ll talk about:
How you currently use and access your backyard
Any problem areas (drainage, layout, lack of privacy, etc.)
Features that matter most—outdoor dining, kids’ play zones, fire features, deck, pool, etc.
Your desired design style in comparison with the architectural aesthetic of your home

2. PREPARING THE landscape DESIGN QUOTE
Following our consultation, I build a design quote that encompasses the scope of your unique project. I take into consideration the estimated time to complete the design portion of your project. The Landscape Design quote includes:
Research for your design project and preparing a 2D colour landscape design
Selecting plants, obtaining a quote through a wholesale nursery and scheduling delivery
Procuring a quote from a preferred Landscaping Contractor
If you agree to hire me, I require a 50% deposit to begin work on your project. The balance is paid upon sign-off of the final Landscape Design.
3. SITE ANALYSIS
Site Analysis is the very first step in designing your outdoor spaces. If you have a property plan or survey, this is very helpful to identify property lines and the division between yours and city property. The process is complex and includes:
Taking measurements and elevation points
Soil analysis and drainage
Identifying sunny & shady areas
Defining circulation pathways
The Site Analysis is an essential step in the Landscape Design process. All of these details compiled are taken into consideration through the design process.
3. Planning the LANDSCAPE Design and Layout
Beginning the design phase includes seeing some inspirational photos from you, doing research, analyzing the geometry of your space, important sight lines, to name a few. Getting the right functionality paired with the intended aesthetic is key to giving you the outdoor space you need and want. This includes:
2D scaled, colour layout drawings
Material selection (stone, wood, lighting, etc.)
Integration of existing elements (trees, garages, etc.)
Zoning and building code considerations
When it comes to structures, pools, or decks, local by-laws are always investigated and permits obtained, where required. For reference, the City of Toronto’s Residential Landscaping Guide provides insight into permits and regulations.
4. Setting Realistic Timelines
A typical backyard remodel in Toronto takes anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the scope. Here’s a general breakdown:
Small refresh (planting, minor patio work): 2–3 weeks
Full layout change with hardscaping: 6–8 weeks
Pool, structure, and multi-zone landscaping: 10–12 weeks or more
Weather, permits, and material lead times can all affect your timeline. We’ll communicate clearly at each stage.
5. Managing the Budget
Backyard remodels in Toronto usually fall into three tiers:
Modest refresh: $8,000–$15,000
Mid-range makeover: $20,000–$40,000
Luxury renovation (pool, kitchen, cabana): $50,000–$100,000+
Factors that affect cost include:
Site access
Drainage upgrades
Materials (natural stone vs. pavers)
Custom features like fireplaces or pergolas or upgraded hardware on gates or fences
🔗 For more on combining hardscaping with function, visit our Patio Design Guide.
6. Expect a Bit of Mess
YES! There is a short period of time where your backyard will be a construction zone. Soil, dust, equipment, and heavy materials are part of the process. This involves all the necessary groundwork for grading, digging trenches for gas, electrical or irrigation lines and preparation of the required base for paving materials and garden beds. We protect walkways, clean up daily, and keep noise to city-legal hours.
Good communication is key—our team checks in frequently and shares updates so you know what’s happening.
7. Choosing the Right Features
What you include in your remodel depends on how you want to live outdoors. Here are a few popular options in Toronto:
Pools, spas and saunas for family fun and relaxation
Fire pits or fireplaces for added warmth, ambiance or a place to roast marshmallows
Pergolas & shade structures to extend time spent outdoors
Outdoor kitchens including bbq’s, fridges, pizza ovens or smokers
LED low-voltage lighting to highlight paths and plants
Irrigation to maintain the beauty and life of your plant material
Planting beds, lawn alternatives and designated areas to grow food
8. Final Walk through & Maintenance Planning
Once everything is installed, we walk through the space together to make sure every detail is just right. We’ll also explain how to maintain:
Plantings
Irrigation systems
Stone surfaces and lighting
Optional maintenance plans are available for seasonal care. And if something needs adjustment, we’re just a call away.
